Presidential Cabinet Secretary. A Burlington, Iowa newspaperman, Hatton identified with the Stalwart faction of the Republican party and was ardent foe of civil service reform. Upon Walter Q. Gresham's reasignment to Secretary of Treasury, President Chester A. Arthur appointed Hatton from Assistant Postmaster to the Postmaster General cabinet position in late 1884. Hatton worked unsuccessfully to renominate President Arthur at the 1884 Republican Convention. After he left office in March 1885, Hatton returned to the newspaper business. While serving as the editor of the Washington Post, he was stricken with a massive stroke at his desk and died two days after his 48th birthday.
