CHRISTOPHER T. BAILEY was born in Kingston, Massachusetts on January 31, 1833 son of Thomas and Cynthia (Chandler) Bailey. Christopher married Henrietta Sawin and on the birth records of their son Frank S. Bailey, his occupation was listed as “State Constable.” Christopher T. Bailey was a Civil War Veteran serving with both the 12th and 39th Regiments and was promoted lieutenant in May of 1864. Christopher was appointed a state police constable from 1873 to 1875 and was appointed a state police detective from 1879 to 1882. He left the state police and went to work as a police officer for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad.
According to a Boston Herald story in November of 1894, Christopher Bailey and four other men were sentenced to four months in the Plymouth House of Correction for “Inciting a Riot.” The incident that precipitated the jail sentence occurred when workers for the Rockland and Abington Street Railway attempted to lay its tracks across the Old Colony New York, New Haven and Hartford rails and were stopped by Bailey and other employees of NY, NH, H, RR. After they were found guilty, they were denied a request to stay the sentence to get their matters in order, and taken directly to jail. On March 7, 1895 they were released 6 days early for good behavior. On April 25, 1895 Christopher T Bailey was named Chief of Police for the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad. Christopher died at 68 years of age on September 16, 1901 and is buried in the Village Cemetery, Weymouth, MA.
