Denmark and Norway Monarch. Her parents were Landgraf Wilhelm VI of Hessen-Kassel and Landgräfin Hedwig Sophia of Brandenburg. Charlotte Amalie was brought up in the Calvinist Protestant faith, and she remained a calvinist although it was expected, that she should convert into the Lutheran faith as Queen of Denmark and Norway. She established the Reformed Church in the strictly lutheran city of Copenhagen. 1665 she was married to crownprince Christian, later king Christian V. She gave birth to 7 children. the eldest son was king Frederik IV. her daughter princess Sofie Hedvig was supposed to marry the german emperor Joseph I, but she refused to abandon her lutheran faith and become a catholic, and the marriage-arrangement was dropped. Queen Charlotte Amalies name was given to the capital city on the Danish Virgin Islands, who i 1917 were sold to the United States, and became the US Virgin Islands.
