Avoca - Richard C. Erickson, 80, of Wagner Gully Road, Cohocton (NY), died after a brief illness early, March 22 (2008) at the Taylor Nursing Facility.
Born in Caribou, Maine on Nov. 14, 1927, he was the son of Rudolph and Mildred [Thorsen] Erickson. On June 24, 1950 he married Florence Fox who predeceased him on Nov. 17, 2005.
After serving briefly in Germany in the Army, from April 1946 - May 1947, he was employed at Ingersoll Rand before owning and operating a potator farm with his wife. Upon retiring from farming and being someone accustomed to working hard and keeping busy, he passed his civil service exam in 1981 and became a canal lock operator on the New York State Canal System, working mostly arond the Seneca Falls and Waterloo areas. This allowed them both to enjoy their boating as well as motor home life together.
Richard always helped Florence support the animal shelter and many needy animals over the years, and continued to care for dogs and cats all his life, with his little "Goldie" cat still spending many hours with time while he was at the nursing home.
Richard is survived by his sisters-in-law, Jean Erickson of Garner, MA, and Betrice Hill of Avoca (NY); brother-in-law, Harlo (Shirley) Fox of Corning; special cousin Elaine (Everett) Sjoberg of St. Johnsbury, Vermont; and many niecws and nephews.
Besides his parents and his wife, Florence, Richard was also predeceased by his brother, Robert; sisters-in-law Muzette (Lawrence) Zimmer and Virginia (Charles) Hill; brothers-in-law, Harold and Milford Fox and Kelsey Hills; and nephew, William Hill.
There were no calling hours or funeral services. In lieu of flowers those wishing may contribute to the Finger Lakes Humane Society, Bath, NY 14809. Arrangements were with the Avoca Funeral Home.
