Frank Joseph Abate, Sr., known to everyone as Bud, graced this world for 80 wonderful years. A man of great charisma, Bud led his life with pride, honor, and integrity in his own unique way. While visiting their vacation home in Fort Mohave, Arizona, and having enjoyed a day of gambling, Bud laid down on the evening of July 19, 2012, with his loving wife of 61 years by his side. After kissing each other goodnight, Bud peacefully left this earth. Born of Italian-Irish decent, Bud entered this world on December 9, 1931 in Newton, Massachusetts, the second of seven children born to parents Thomas Abate and Albina (Cronin). Bud grew up in Lawrence, Massachusetts (known as the "Immigrant City"), a small mill town on the Merrimack River. Hard times forced Bud to begin working at the young age of 9, shining shoes and selling newspapers on the street. After completing his 8th grade education, Bud's father abandoned the family forcing him to assume the role of sole supporter to his Mother and 6 siblings, yet he never complained. Through friends, Bud met his beautiful wife and true soulmate, Virginia DeBurra. They married on February 4, 1951, in Lawrence, Massachusetts, while Bud was home on military leave. Their marriage of 61 years was a model of love and faithfulness. A true patriot (and a Republican), at the age of 19, Bud enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving our country with loyalty from 1950 to 1953. In 1952, while stationed at Sandia Air Force Base in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Dad and Mom welcomed their first child, Frank Joseph Jr. Upon Bud's honorable discharge from the service, the family settled in Redondo Beach, CA, and expanded their family by welcoming daughters Deborah Ann in 1954, and Diane Marie in 1955. Upon arriving in California, Bud began work in the aerospace industry (McDonnell Douglas), before finding his passion and moving on to become a wonderful cabinet maker, retiring after 25 years. Bud had a bright smile, full of quick witty jokes, loved to play, and excelled at it quite well, wherever he was! Bud's favorite pastimes included hunting; fishing; throwing horseshoes; family poker games. In Dad's later years, visiting casino's, painting ceramics, and napping in his recliner, whether it be morning, noon, or night. "Dollar Bill Grandpa" was a proud and enthusiastic Grandpa who always had a smile and a dollar bill for each visiting grandchild. He was the grandparent every kid hopes to have. Bud's spirit lives on through his wife of 61 years, Virginia; his 3 children, 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter arriving soon! Additionally, Bud leaves behind his 4 surviving siblings, sister's Ann Volianites, Shirley Alvange, and Mary Stauffer, all of Massachusetts, and his brother Thomas Abate of Florida, as well as many nieces, nephews and their families. Bud's path to Heaven has been well paved. Predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Albina Abate, two younger brothers, Daniel and Joey Abate, and an infant Grandson, Austin Montoya. Services will be held on Monday, July 30, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, in the Pacifica North Section of the park. Bud was slowly taken from us by the effects of diabetes. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Diabetes Association are welcome in memory of Bud.
