In 1851, he returned to Des Moines County and on November 25, 1851, Jacob married Sarah Jane Cameron in Burlington. Rev William Salter of the First Congregational Church performed the wedding ceremony.
The following year, Jacob, Sarah and others from Burlington traveled back to the Stockton area via ox drawn wagons. The Leffler fortune was not met, so Sarah and Jacob returned to Des Moines County in 1856.
Jacob became a leader in his community and was elected to Trustee of Union Township for two terms. The Leffler farm became known as Leffler Station.
