Tom was a Civil War Veteran.
When he was about twenty-eight years old, he and his wife, Mary Balcy and their three small children, Willie Washington, Paul and Mary, came to Texas. The famly moved to Johnson County, Texas in about 1873. Two years later, the family moved to Mills County, Texas, and located in a log cabin near Simms Creek.
Their daughter Mary died on her fourth birthday and was the first grave in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Their son Paul was killed three years later. The story of his tragic death is told in the book "Mills County, The Way it Was".

When Tom Berry passed away, he left a parcel of land in the Pleasant Grove Community for each of his living children, which is Southeast of Goldthwaite.
