US Cabinet Official, US Diplomat. While serving as the Undersecretary of State from 1961 to 1966 in the administrations of Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Baines Johnson, he became known as the main voice against the Vietnam War during the escalation in the 1960s. He resigned in 1966, and served as United States Ambassador to the United Nations from June 26 to September 25, 1968. He also served as unofficial adviser to President Jimmy Carter.
