His mother died of this and he may have as well. His descendants have a 50/50 chance of having this disease. The article newspaper info is included because I didn't write the entire lengthy thing. Some of his descendants may need to read this for their own health. His mother was the Mrs. Garrett Aalberts mentioned in the article.

The Sioux County Index (Hull, Iowa) 5 Aug 1971, Thurs page 1
Ataxia has stricken members of the Jan Vandenburg descendants on an almost mathematical basis for the better part of three centuries.
Here in Sioux County, Mrs. H. J. Van Veldhuizen had this disease. She passed away in 1922. Seven children were born to her and her husband. Of the seven, 4 were stricken and died with this disease…they are Frances, Mrs. Gerrit Kleinhesselink in 1943 in a Sioux Falls hospital; Henrietta, Mrs. Melvin Harman in 1944 at Slayton, Minn. And formerly of south of Boyden; Janet, Mrs. Garrett Aalberts in 1956 after being bedridden for 12 years, the last 2 ½ spent in the Orange City Hospital; and Henry in 1953, and was a Boydenite most of his life, a veteran of WWII, a former American Legion member and spent the last years in the Veterans' Hospital in Sioux Falls.
There are many descendants from these members of the Van Veldhuizen family who are all in line to be victims of this Ataxia on a fifty-fifty basis.
