Chicago Tribune obituary

Edward Noble Lee, 85, a former law professor, was a Chicago attorney for over 50 years. He served from 1937 to 1945 on the faculty of John Marshall Law School, where his father had been a co-founder and dean, and on the faculty of Northwestern University from 1945 to 1964.

His career also included being an officer of a pioneer airline, serving three years as a tax specialist on the fabled Edith McCormick Rockefeller estate and working as legal counsel for the large insurance brokerage firm of Marsh McLennan, Inc. After he retired, he was secretary and legal counsel for L.F. Draper and Associates, real estate developers, in Palatine.

Memorial services for Mr. Lee, a resident of Evanston, will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 12 in the First Congregational Church, Hinman Avenue and Grove Street, Evanston. He died Sunday at home.

His father, Edward T. Lee, was dean of John Marshall Law School from 1900 to 1943. His mother, Margaret Noble Lee, also graduated from there, as did his brother, Noble Lee, who held the position of dean as his father had. His own sons, Edward Jr. and John R., both subsequently graduated from the law school. Mr. Lee received a bachelor`s degree from the University of Chicago and a graduate degree in journalism from the University of Wisconsin. In 1927, he was the recipient of an MBA from Harvard University Business School.

From 1927 to 1929, Mr. Lee was assistant secretary and treasurer of National Air Transport, a predecessor of United Airlines. The firm provided the airmail route from Dallas and Chicago to New York. Early passengers, including many movie stars, rode on top of the sacks of airmail to reach their destinations. When the firm moved to New York, Mr. Lee decided to stay in Chicago and enrolled in John Marshall Law School.

After graduating, he taught at the school for 12 years, then started teaching business law at Northwestern University.

In 1942, he became associated with the Cassels, Potter and Bentley law firm, working almost exclusively on the complicated estate of Edith Rockefeller McCormick, the daughter of John D. Rockefeller and ex-wife of reaper heir Harold McCormick. Long one of the richest women in the world, she had died during the Depression, having come close to bankrupcy.

He also operated a blueberry farm near Holland, Mich., that had been in the family since 1911. Starting as a family hobby, it eventually produced 30 to 40 tons of berries a year.

Survivors, besides his sons, include his wife, Charlotte; a daughter, Elizabeth; a granddaughter; and a sister, Marjorie Wahlgren.
