Ochs, an old man well known, a cripple, died in the 3rd ward lately.

Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, October 19, 1882

An old man residing in the third ward named Ochs, was knocked down and robbed by a tramp in front of Greve's planning mill at about seven o'clock on Friday evening and relieved of some $18 in money. It seems that Ochs was intoxicated at the time — something not entirely unusual with him — and while in a saloon on Washington Street he exhibited his money. This caught the eye of a tramp who was there at the time and he evidently wasn't slow in thinking up a plan whereby he could become the possessor of the old man's wealth. Pretending he wanted to visit some house near the lake, he prevailed upon Ochs to go with him in the capacity of a guide and as soon as they reached a quiet part of the street, he proceeded to "go through him". After getting the money he left, of course, while the old man picked himself up as best he could and proceeded to alarm the neighborhood by shouting "fire" as loud as his physical condition would permit. The tramp was not seen again. It was a bold proceeding and one that will learn Mr. Ochs a lesson.
