Alan M. Ohde, 46 (photo), of Rt. 5, Manitowoc, owner and publisher of the weekly Times Journal at Chilton, took his own life Friday afternoon at his home. He had been in ill health for some time.


Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Mittnacht Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Gervase Zanotti of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Military rites at the graveside will be conducted by the Otto Oas Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.


He was born in Manitowoc Aug 29, 1908, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. F. Ohde. He attended Manitowoc schools and was graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1928. He attended Wentworth Military Academy for two years and Cornell University for three years.


He was employed by the Rockford, Ill., newspaper for a year and then became associated with the Manitowoc Herald Times in 1934 and was manager of the National Advertising Department until he entered the service in 1942. During World War II he was a combat photographer with the rank of first lieutenant in the U.S. infantry and advanced to the rank of captain in 1946. He had been a member of the Reserve Officers Assn. since his attendance at Wentworth Military academy and was a former officer of the Wisconsin organization.


After the war he returned to the Manitowoc Herald Times in his former capacity and in 1948 because business and advertising manager of the Two Rivers Reporter. In 1953 he purchased the Chilton Times-Journal from William J. McHale. Mr. Ohde was a former member of the Rotary Club in Two Rivers and the Elks Clubs of the two cities, and was a member of the Chilton Kiwanis Club at his death. He was also a member of the Reserve Officers Assn. and the Veterans of Foreign Wars at Manitowoc. He headed the Boy Scout drive in Two Rivers in 1948 and was active in Red Cross and Community Fund drives in Manitowoc. He was one of the early organizers of the Manitowoc Junior Chamber of Commerce, and a director of the Manitowoc Newspapers, Inc.


On Sept. 11, 1937, he married the former Jane Sutter and the couple took up their home on Rt. 5, Manitowoc.


Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Susan, and a brother, William F. Ohde, of Manitowoc.


Friends may call at the funeral home from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. The casket will not be opened.
