Advertising Executive, William F. Ohde, Dies


William Frederick Ohde of 819 N. 12th St., who exemplified community service to a marked degree, died at 5:15 p.m. Friday at Memorial Hospital. Mr. Ohde, 45, had been ill five days.


At the time of his death he had been advertising director of Aluminum Specialty Co. He had been in good health until stricken Sunday evening. Death was attributed to a ruptured esophagus.


From the time he was old enough to join Troop 12 of the Kiwanis Club as a Boy Scout in 1928, Mr. Ohde had been active in his community, giving of himself in a variety of ways.


Interested in Music

He served as president of Manitowoc County Civic Music Assn. two terms, 1955 through 1957, and because of his avid interest in music assisted other organizations in promoting such activities. He was a member of the Manitowoc Barbershop Chorus and for a number of years assisted in the development of a local chapter for the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America Inc.


Mr. Ohde was also active in First Presbyterian Church where he was a member of the Chancel Choir and was chairman for publicity of the building and expansion program of the church. Because of his fine singing voice, he frequently was asked to sing for church weddings.


He became a first class scout and in subsequent years following his association with the Rotary Club, served as its Cub Scout pack committee chairman from 1949 through 1952. He was institutional representative from the Rotary Club to Waumegasako Boy Scout Council 1954-57 and then served the council as neighborhood commissioner from 1952-1957. He had been a merit badge counselor since 1955.

Advertising Manager

He was elected president of Memorial Hospital Board of Directors Sept. 9, 1957, and was a member of the board.


After his graduation from Lincoln High School in 1934 he enrolled that fall in the College of Liberal Arts at Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill., and was graduated in 1938. While at the university he was a member of Phi Delta Theta, National social fraternity.


Mr. Ohde became associated with Manitowoc Newspapers Inc., in 1939, serving the Manitowoc Herald-Times and the Two Rivers newspapers 19 years in the advertising departments. He was appointed national advertising manager of the two papers in 1957 and had been a member of the Board of Directors of Manitowoc Newspapers Inc. While serving with The Herald Times he joined the armed forces for a period of 11 months in 1955 and 1956 and was with the U.S. Army paratroopers.


Funeral Services.

In August of 1958 he left the newspaper field to become advertising director for Aluminum Specialty Co.


The son of the late William Francis and Eva May DeLano Ohde, he was born in this city Aug. 11, 1915. He married Madaline Grace Trastek Aug. 10, 1940.


Surviving are his wife, two sons, William F. Jr., and John, and a daughter, Penelope, at home.


Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at First Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Gervase Zanotti will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.


Friends may call at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home after 3 p.m. Sunday until 11 a.m. Monday when the casket will be moved to the church here the body will lie in state until the hour of service.


Memorial gifts may be made to Memorial Hospital or the Memorial Fund of First Presbyterian Church.
