AUGUST OHM

(1879 • 1955)

August H. Ohm, 76 (photo), retired superintendent of the Paragon Electric Co., Two Rivers, and a resident of Manitowoc for 53 years, died at his home at 1420 Hawthorne St., Two Rivers, at 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

Mr. Ohm, who retired from the Paragon firm position in 1945, had been afflicted with a heart condition for the past two years. The Ohms moved from their home at 1038 S. 10th St., Manitowoc, where they resided for 35 years, on Oct. 26 to reside with their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Swensen.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First German Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. L. H. Koeninger officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Mr. Ohm was born in Germany on Aug. 10, 1879, a son of the late John and Wilhelmina Hoefs Ohm. When he was nine years old the family brought him to this country, settling in Milwaukee. In his youth he was employed in Milwaukee and in 1901 he married the former Bertha Bergelin of the Town of Gibson at the Lutheran Church in that township. In 1902 the couple moved from Milwaukee to Manitowoc and Mr. Ohm took employment with the Chicago & North Western Railway, and later with the Manitowoc Boiler Works. A short while later he became a member of the Manitowoc Fire dept., but was retired in 1915 with a disability suffered through fighting a fire at the old Frazier furniture store.

In 1916 Mr. Ohm entered the employ of the Paragon company at Manitowoc, and also learned the jeweler's trade from the late Herbert Menge, Paragon's first employe. Several years later he took charge of the firm's operations, holding the superintendency until his retirement in 1945.

During his retirement he maintained his long hobby of repairing electric clocks and did considerable engraving work. He continued these activities in moving to Two Rivers to a time several weeks ago when he was stricken with illness. For many years, Mr. Ohm was active in affairs of the First German Evangelical Lutheran Church at Manitowoc and served for a number of years as an elder and a trustee.

The couple observed its golden wedding anniversary in 1951.

Besides his wife he leaves two daughters, Mrs. Emil (Luella) Swensen of Two Rivers and Mrs. William A. (Elda) Bartz of Silver Springs, Md.; a son, Roland J. Ohm, a Milwaukee pharmacist; two sisters, Mrs. Amelia Schrubbe and Mrs. John Hein of Milwaukee; a brother, Charles Ohm of Milwaukee; three grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Urbanek & Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, after 3 p.m. Tuesday until 10:30 a.m. Wednesday when the casket will be taken to the church where the body will lie in state until the time of services.
