ANOTHER PIONEER OF LAKES GONE

OLE L. OLSON SAILS ON LAST VOYAGE TODAY

Death Pilots Pioneer Lake Vesselman to Port of Refuge for All Time

Ole L. Olson, 72, one of the last survivors of the early day vesselmen who contributed so much to the development of Manitowoc as a shipping port, passed away at his home 436 N. Ninth street early today. Death was due to complications and old age and illness of but six weeks. Mr. Olson was of the hardy pioneer stock whose constitution battled strongly against death but failed. Death came peacefully at 1:30 this morning.

Master and Owner of Ships

Mr. Olson is connected prominently with the development of Manitowoc as a lake port. At an early age his desire to follow the lakes was fulfilled by signing with one of the many sailing vessels that plied the lakes and made the port regularly. His rise was rapid and for many years he was master of crafts that made this port. Among the many vessels on which he shipped were the Success, Felicitas, and the L.B. Coats, the latter of which he owned all typical of the early day cargo, mast and rigging ships.

Mr. Olson was born in Valders, Norway, December 14, 1854, and at the age of two, came to this country, directly to Manitowoc where he established a home with his parents, on the same ground on which he passed away.

Retired Twenty-Five Years

Twenty-five years ago Mr. Olson retired from his sailing activities and made his home with a brother Peter O. Peterson and his family at 436 North Ninth street. He was never married and is survived only by two sisters, Mrs. Peter O. Peterson of this city and Mrs. F.T. Braganier of Bisbee, Arizona, and four brothers, Martin of this city, Anton of Tisch Mills, Sigward of Green Bay and Oscar of Arizona.

Definite arrangement of funeral and burial services are pending word from relatives in distant states.
