According to censuses Esther was born on the Isle of Malta in about 1822. She was the wife of Vere Stenton and they were living in Detroit, Michigan in 1850 and 1860. They had seven children, all born in Michigan. One son, George Vere Stenton, died in the Civil War.
Esther was married a second time to William F. Cole in Detroit on 14 Dec 1863. The 1870 census shows them living in Detroit. In 1880 she was widowed and living in Detroit, and in 1900 she was living with her son Francis Stenton in Cleveland, Ohio.
