Oswald, Cook Drowns in Ohio


Wencil F. Oswald, 55, of 2119 Kemper St., Manitowoc, drowned Thursday morning at Toledo, Ohio, where the Great Lakes freighter Sylvania on which he was a second cook the past sailing season was moored.


Oswald was born Sept. 25, 1912, at Manitowoc, son of the late George and Mrs. Anna Naidl Oswald. He married Gertrude Franz at Manitowoc May 9, 1935, and the couple located here.


He was a World War II veteran, entering service Nov. 18, 1943, and was discharged Jan. 26, 1946. He had been with Co. E., 12th Infantry, Fourth Division of the First Army and saw action in Normandy, Rhineland and France. He was awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. At the time of his discharge he was a staff sergeant assigned to a prisoner of war detachment in southern France. When he returned home Oswald operated a tavern at Mishicot 18 months and a tavern and grocery at St. Anna for 18 months. He then worked for the Pittsburgh, Boland, Reiss and Tomlinson steamship lines. He was a member of Holy Name Society and Seafarers International Union.


Survivors are his wife, mother, Mrs. Anna Oswald and a brother, Edward, of Manitowoc. A brother preceded him in death.


Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church. The Rev. E.A. Radey will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.


Military rites will be conducted by the Drews-Bleser American Legion Post No. 88. Friends may call at the funeral home where at 8 o'clock this Friday evening the Rosary will be recited.

Body of Seaman Found in Lake Erie


TOLEDO, Ohio (AP)—An autopsy has been scheduled concerning the death of a Wisconsin freighter crewman whose body was discovered Thursday in Lake Erie a short distance offshore from nearby Oregon.


The victim was identified as Wencil Oswald, 55, of Manitowoc, Wis., a crewman aboard the freighter Sylvania.


Authorities said there was no sign of foul play, and that the victim may have fallen overboard.
