Monsignor Joel Wiggs, 78, a retired priest at Sacred Heart Parish in Humboldt and a former pastor in what is now the Diocese of Knoxville, died Wednesday, June 6, 2001, at his residence.

Monsignor Wiggs was pastor of Blessed Sacrament Parish in Harriman and its missions from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s. Born in Nashville, he was a longtime classmate of Father Philip Thoni, now serving at St. Mary Parish in Gatlinburg. Both priests were ordained together. Monsignor Wiggs was educated at the Cathedral of the Incarnation School and Father Ryan High School in Nashville, St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, and St. Mary's Seminary and University in Baltimore, Md.

He is survived by his sisters and brothers-in-law, Jennie and Bob Clendening of Nashville, and Carrie and Phil Robinson of Schaum-burg, Ill.; brothers and sisters-in-law, Alex and Nancy Wiggs of Nashville, and Robert and Helen Wiggs of Columbia; 20 nieces and nephews; and 10 great-nieces and great-nephews.

The funeral Mass was Tuesday, June 12, at the Cathedral of the Incarnation in Nashville with Bishop J. Terry Steib as celebrant.
