William Head was the son of John and Elizabeth(Vowles) Head. He was born at Gethesame, Ky on the Head farm on Pottingers Creek. He married Rosalia(Spalding) Head on 2/13/1835. She was the daughter of Peter Spalding and Sarah Walker. William was a farmer and built a log home in 1835 on the 156 acres he owned in Gethsemane. The location is present day Dee Head Road In Gethsemane They had 14 children and had 99 grandchildren at the time of his death. The family went to church at the Gethsemane Abbey. On March 10, 1854, a black girl named Mary Head was baptized at the Abbey. Her parents are listed as Wallis and Emelie Head. William is listed as the owner. William sent all six of his sons to college, a rare thing in the mid 1800s. John, Thomas, James, Josephus, Nicholas and Emmanuel Head all attended Saint Mary's College in Marion County, Ky. It was the 3rd oldest Catholic College in the US. John and James Head moved to Curdsville, (Daviess County) Ky for teaching positions in 1865 and John in 1867. Their farms were across the road from each other. Josephus was a teacher at Gethsemane. The youngest son Emmanuel Head, almost got to go to Europe with the Abbott of Gethsemane, but at the last moment got sick and could not go.
