Joseph Henry Hannon was the 5th of eight children born to Frederick Michael Hannon and Mary Agnes Tucker. Other siblings include: Lucille Marie, Mary Elizabeth, Leo Frederick, Paul Michael, Rita Theresa, Raymond Mark and William Thomas.
Joseph married Mary Eleanor Gillespey on May 5, 1956 at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Decatur, Illinois. They adopted a son, Michael Terrance, and then had two children: Teresa Michelle and Joseph Patrick.
