Lester was born near Chicago, Illinois. He had 4 brothers. The boys were sent to live with their grandparents, in Chicago, after their mother died of pneumonia (age 40). Their dad didn't think he could raise them and work at the same time.

Lester served in the Navy in WWI. He met his wife Marjorie in church and after the war they were married. They moved to Tucson, Arizona where he attended the University and obtained his Law Degree.
