Ada was born and grew up in New Jersey. Her nursing career spanned 40 years, beginning as a licensed practical nurse and assistant instructor in 1936 at a teaching hospital in the Bronx, New York. She also attended Teacher’s College at Columbia University during those years. The City of New York recognized her in 1945 for public service during World War II. She met Edward Dean while visiting college friends in Detroit. They were married and settled in Detroit in 1948. She was appointed here to serve as head nurse at Herman Kiefer Hospital. She eventually became a supervisor at Detroit General Hospital, where she also taught nursing students from Wayne State University. She was active in religious, professional, social and community organizations. She was a member of Plymouth Congregation Church. She also held board positions in the Better Schools and Russell Woods Associations in Detroit. She was active with the Urban League and NAACP. She returned to New Jersey after the 1968 death of her husband, where she continued her nursing career and retired in 1982 as an instructor of nurses at Essex County Hospital Center in Cedar Grove, N.J. She died at the Regent Care Center in Hackensack, N.J. Survivors include two daughters, Diane Dean and A. Denise Dean; a stepdaughter, Donna Dean Taylor; a brother; two granddaughters; and three great-grandsons.
