Col. Heinmiller retired in 1966 after serving for more than 24 years in the United States Air Force. After earning his pilots wings in 1942, he served in the South Pacific during WWII. Following WWII, he and his wife Ruth were transferred to Ft. Benning GA, He and his family were also stationed in Nebraska, Charleston, SC, Hawaii and McGuire AFB in New Jersey.
As a Command Pilot, Col. Heinmiller flew more than 5,000 hours in C-47, C-54, C-118 and C-121 aircraft.
During his illustrious career, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal, with three oak leaf clusters, and the Commendation Medal.
Col. Heinmiller was also a member of the "Caterpillar Club" , which recognizes those whose lives were saved after parachuting from a disabled aircraft.
He is survived by his wife Ruth, his four children P.J., Greg, Sheila and Randy. His grandchildren, Angie, Katie, Amanda, Jenny, Jason, Chris, P.J. and Acme, and four great grandchildren, James, Katelyn, Danny and Stella.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 pm on Thursday, September 15 at Glick Family Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 9:30 am on Friday, September 16 at Glick Family Funeral Home. Burial with military honors will be held at 11:15 am on Friday, September 16 at South Florida National Cemetery.
The family requests expressions of sympathy in lieu of flowers be made to the American Diabetes Association.
