Paul H. Abeel
August 13, 2001
Paul H. Abeel, 79, of Tannersville, died on Monday afternoon in Stroud Manor Nursing Home, East Stroudsburg. He was the husband of Diane (Davis) Abeel, with whom he had celebrated 52 years of marriage on April 17.
Born on October 27, 1921, in New York City, N.Y., he was the son of the late Howard and Essie O. (Smith) Abeel and was a part-time resident of Monroe County since 1941 and moved here permanently in the early 1960s.
Paul earned his high school education at the Essie Olive Abeel Private School and then attended the Paterson State Teachers College. His bachelor of science in Business Administration was earned with high honors from the University of Newark (now Rutgers) and a master of business degree was earned from New York University. He also took graduate courses at Columbia University.
His mother was the founder of the Essie Olive Abeel Private School in Hackensack, N.J., at which Paul served in several capacities including principal, assistant principal, business manager and office manager. He was also a certified public accountant, having worked for A.G. Schoonmaker Co. in New York City and operated his own private practice. Paul was a business manager of East Stroudsburg School District and East Stroudsburg State College (now E.S.U.).
Having served in the United States Army Air Force, Paul was a financial technical clerk and was honorably discharged as a corporal.
Prior to moving to the Poconos, he was an elder of the First Reformed Church in Hackensack.
Paul's community activities include membership in the Rotary Club of Hackensack, N.J., of which he was a past president, an eagle scout of the Boy Scouts of America, the Rotary Club of Stroudsburg, an active member of the Central Pocono Ambulance Association, the Lehigh Valley Chapter of the Pennsylvania Society of Public Accountants and past treasurer of Pocono Area Youth for Christ.
Paul and his mother founded and operated the Abeel Farm in Tannersville, which was a summer camp for children. Later, the farm became the Abeel's Hearthstone Cottages, which Paul and his wife owned and operated for many years.
An active member of the Reeders United Methodist Church, he was a Sunday school teacher, Sunday school superintendent and a member of the administrative board.
Paul's desire was for all to come to know Christ Jesus as their personal Lord and savior and live a life full of grace. Psalm 118:22 says "the stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone."
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are two daughters, Christine Welch of Mount Pocono and Louise Ralston of Wasilla, Alaska; two grandsons, David Welch and Adam Welch, both of State College; a niece, Rachel Abeel Bissex; and three nephews, Karl Abeel Bissex, Walter Abeel Bissex and Donald Abeel Bissex. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Harriet Abeel Bissex and Bernice Abeel.
