When she was six months old she moved with her family to Klemme, Iowa, then to South Dakota and then moved back to Aplington, Iowa. She graduated from Aplington High School in 1928. In 1931 she received her registered nursing degree from Marshalltown Evangelical Hospital in Marshalltown, IA. Esther moved to St. Louis, MO, where for two years she was a governess for three children in a millionaire's home. She then did general and private duty at St. Louis' Barnes Hospital. Later she moved back to Hampton, IA and worked in a doctor's office.
Esther married Wilbur E. Sharpe on December 26, 1941 at Chapin, IA. While her husband was on overseas duty during WW II, she obtained her anesthesia degree at Cook County Hospital in Chicago, IL. She then worked in the hospital in Hampton, IA. Upon her husband's return, they lived in Reno, NV and Dayton, OH, before settling in Detroit, MI, where their three children were born. Later they moved to Battle Creek, MI, then to Omaha, NE and finally to Columbus, NE in 1964, where her husband purchased an accounting practice.
In Columbus she worked for nine months as the Assistant R.N. at the Columbus Manor when it first opened. From 1968 to 1970 she was a school nurse in the Columbus Public Schools, working at the Columbus High, North Park, West Park, Emerson and Lost Creek schools. For many years she worked in her husband's office.
Esther was a member of the Federated Church, where she served as an Elder, sang in the chancel choir, and was a member of the Women's Fellowship and Circle 1. She was a life member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in which she was a former officer and Girl of the Year. She was a member and former officer in Chapter FJ of P.E.O. Sisterhood. She was a former member of the Hospital Auxiliary and sang for three years with the Mother's Singers. Esther loved gardening, reading, music, traveling, and things to do with colors. Memorials may be directed to the Federated Church Building Fund, Morys Haven Nursing Home, or donor's choice.
