Jimmy was the son of James Edward Banks and Ruby Lee Barnett Banks. His grandparents were James Clyde Banks and Ida Morris Banks of Bruce (Bruce Cemetery) and Jetta Lucille Hill Barnett Carr (Pleasant Ridge Cemetery) of Collierville, Tennessee and Milton Lee Barnett (Ellzey Cemetery)of Houston. He had two sisters at the time of his death Theresa Dianne Banks (Bruce Cemetery) and Kathy Lynn Banks. He later had two more sisters, Donna Lisa Banks and Cynthia Ann Banks.

He lived in Memphis, Tennessee on Frisco Avenue all of his short life making frequent visits to Bruce. Jimmy was at a neighbor's home playing on Veteran's Day. The other boy, James Cox found a rifle. They didn't think it was loaded, but it was. James ran to our house to get help. Our sister, Dianne, got there first. She told me that she felt guilty her entire life for not being able to stop the bleeding. She was only eight years old and he was shot in the heart.
