~A Signer of the Petition to form Houston County, Texas~

"The Grapeland Messenger" Page 10,Thursday,June 16,1983 Grapeland,Houston County,Texas Sunday,June the 6th was a great day for Houston County. More than 250 persons joined in the 146th birthday anniversary party with Houston County Historical Comission sponsors near the Strode-Pritchett Log cabin in the Crockett park. Along with recognition of county's 146th anniversary, the Historical commission's purpose was to focus attention on the decendants of the petitioners, Thomas Denson and Reuben Brown, who asked for a new county in 1837. Their petition brought about the first county of the Republic of Texas which had a special place in the upcoming Squicentennial Celebration in 1986, a celebration of the Independence of Texas as a Republic, Houston County will follow in 1987,as the first county of that independent Republic, and has already qualified as a Texas Independence County. The Thomas Denson Line of descent shows: O'Conner Denson; Caroline (Denson) Owens; Era (Owens) Thetford; La Wanda(Thetford) Pennington;and Ross Pennington,the youngest decendant-9 months old. The oldest decendant present at Sunday's birthday party was 86 year old Beulah (Owens) Brimberry of Grapeland,Mrs. Brimberry is the great-grand-daughter of petitioner Thomas Denson. Mrs. Brimberry's mother was Caroline (Denson) Owens,who was the daughter of O'Conner Denson, son of Thomas Denson. Descent Brown Line is: Reuben Brown,petitioner; John Brown; Virginia(Brown)Owens; Era(Owens) Thetford; La Wanda(Thetford) Pennington; and Ross Pennington. Another line is added by Mrs. Brimberry's daughter, Wanda (Brimberry) Winter, of St. Louis, Missouri, who was recognized as the decendant traveling the longest distance for the birthday party.
