SGT US ARMY - KOREA

GREENBUSH - Ernest Joseph Betters Sr., husband of 63 years to Coris (Smith) Betters, passed away Aug. 2, 2012, at a Bangor hospital. He was born March 4, 1929, in Olamon, son of Aldamond and Sarah (Page) Betters.

Ernest served his country in the U.S. Army and Korean War from 1948 to 1952. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Old Town and M.O.C. No. 21. He was a member of Star in the East Masonic Lodge, Old Town, also Scottish Rites Bodies, 32nd degree and Anah Shrine. He liked riding his go-kart in the Shrine Unit. He worked as a carpenter and retired from the University of Maine Carpenter Shop. Ernest enjoyed camping, dancing and having fun.

In addition to his wife, Coris, he is survived by three sons, Ernest Betters Jr., Steven Betters and Scott Betters; daughter, Rhonda Betters; two brothers, William Betters and Gary Betters of Greenbush; sister, Faye Betters of Howland; brothers-in-law, Edward Bernard, Floyd Smith and Gerald Smith; sister-in-law, Alice Betters; many nieces and nephews. He was known as "Papa" to 8 grandchildren; and 9 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, Ronald, Norris and Reggie; and sisters, Rita LeBreton, Beatrice Bernard and Fern Betters. Thank you to Maine Veterans Home staff for their wonderful care, also to Joshua for the loving care he gave his papa.

Burial with full military honors will be held at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Augusta. (Bangor Daily News posted 8/3/2012)
