BRACKEEN -- Irene Denman Cowart Brackeen, longtime Albuquerque community member and business woman, passed away quietly in her sleep at the Manor Care Nursing home in Albuquerque on Sunday, April 28, 2002 at 1:30 a.m.

Irene founded and operated Zia Abstract and Title Company with her late husband, Harold Brackeen for over forty years before retiring in 2000. Irene was an active member of several professional and social organizations including ZONTA, the Petroleum Club, the Albuquerque Country Club and the So-So Club.

Irene was born in Dallas, TX at Baylor Hospital on September 17, 1925 and graduated from North Dallas High School in 1942. She is a descendant of the Denman family who immigrated from England to Texas with Dewitt's Colony in 1826 where they received a land grant from the Mexican government. Irene was proud to be a member of the Daughter's of the Republic of Texas.

Irene is survived and will be missed greatly by her many friends and her sister, Mary Riffe of Berkeley, CA; her son, and daughter in-law, Donald and Carolyn Brackeen; daughter, Cathy Brackeen King; granddaughter, Rhonda O�Leary; grandsons, Eric Brackeen, and Brenden Michael Sterling of Bakersfield, CA and Matthew Stokes of Houston, TX; nephews, N. Jed Riffe of Berkeley, CA, Kenneth Riffe of Dallas, TX and John Barfield; and niece, Mary Barfield Tomas of Gonzales, TX; grandnieces, Marcia and Michelle McKniff of Boston and Tiffany Terrill of Bonham, TX; and grandnephews, Jason and Zack Riffe of Dallas, TX, Neal, Wes and Scott Barfield and Justin and Bryan Pope of Gonzales, TX.

Services will be held Thursday, 4:00 p.m., at French Mortuary, University Blvd. Chapel, 1111 University Blvd. NE, with Pastor Rick Donaho officiating. Graveside services and interment will take place at the Greenwood Cemetery in Gonzales, Texas on Monday, May 6th.
