"Sparta Rural Mail Carrier Dies Friday - Wayne S Aikens, Aged 33 Years, Succumbs to Attack of Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever - PRIVATE FUNERAL TODAY - Spartansburg, Dec 11 - The large acquaintance of Wayne S Aikens, letter carrier on rural route 3 from the local postoffice, was shocked as well as sincerely grieved to learn this morning of the death at 3 am, at his home, following illness of about a week from a complication of diphtheria and scarlet fever. Mr Aikens secured a leave of absence about two weeks ago to do some work of his own about his place. It was said that in doing this work Mr Aikens was out in the rain, his clothing becoming wet through, and he caught a severe cold from which the maladies developed which caused his death. Postmaster Frank O Jones stated this afternoon that Mr Aikens had not been at the postoffice for over two weeks, therefore there could be no reasons for patrons to be afraid of disease germs at the office. 'We try to keep the postoffice in the best possible condition from a cleanly as well as sanitary standpoint,' said Mr Jones. Enjoyed Wide Acquaintance - Mr Aikens was the son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Aikens, well known Sparta township residents, and was born on June 16, 1898. He attended the township schools and had been a rural carrier from the Spartansburg office for about ten years. He was a pains-taking and obliging official and enjoyed a wide acquaintance, not only on the route which he served but throughout this community in which he was held in high esteem, and his untimely death will be a souce of general regret. Mr Aikens was a member of the IOOF lodge and of the Crawford County Rural Letter Carriers' Association. He is survived by his widow, Mrs Mildred Bowen Aikens, and one son, Douglas Aikens, about two years of age, besides his parents and several brothers and a sister. The body was prepared for interment by Charles Torrey, local mortician, and strictly private services, in accordance with the quarantine law in cases of diphtheria, will be conducted Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock, with interment in Rose Hill cemetery. The burial will also be private. It was stated this afternoon that the other cases of scarlet fever in the borough and vicinity are getting along nicely and it is hoped to prevent a spread of the disease by maintaining a strict quarantine of the cases already developed. As stated in yesterday's Herald, the schools have been closed, and all public meetings are called off until further notices, including church and Sunday school sessions."
