7/22/1929 PICNIC ENDS IN TRAGEDY WHEN YOUTH DROWNS (Monday) --Family Circle Looks on As Father Tries in Vain To Save Son.He was Near Bank.Loss of Strength Blamed As Victim Sinks in Only Six-Foot Depth.Heroic rescue attempts failed late Sunday to save the life of James Albert Briggs, 16-year-old Bethany boy. The youth was drowned while his parents and two brothers looked on at Woods lake, one mile west and a mile and on-half north of stop No. 21 on the El Reno interurban line. D.M. Briggs, father of the boy, was withing four feet of his son when the son vanished from the surface, exhausted after crossing and recrossing the pool. Witnesses said the lad apparently sank from sheer loss of strength. He was only a few yards from the bank when he vanished below the surface of six feet of water. The family had enjoyed a picnic luncheon at the lake, and James and two brothers went swimming while the others sat on the bank. Roy Woods, 18 years old, who lives on a farm two miles west and two miles north of Bethany recovered the body after 30 minutes of desperate diving. As the boy started to sink, his father jumped into the lake from the bank without removing his clothing, but was unable to save him. After the body was recovered, rescuers worked for more than an hour but failed to revive the boy. Deputy Chief J.J. Lynn headed a group of Oklahoma City firemen who answered a call to aid in resuscitating, but their efforts were unavailing. Funeral services will be held at El Reno, relatives announced Sunday night.
