Evelyn Marie Axelson Larson Green passed away on February 24, 2006, after a short illness. She was 99 years old. Evelyn was born in Bellingham at 1616 King St on January 12, 1907. She graduated from Fairhaven High School followed by Bellingham Normal School in 1929. Her first teaching job was in a one-room logging camp school at Deep River, Washington. When the Depression hit the Northwest, the logging camp was closed. Evelyn returned to her parent's home on 21st Street near Western Washington University. The 21st Street Grocery store was across the street from her parent's home; there she met and married Jack Larson. They both managed the 21st Street Grocery through the Depression and the Second World War. During the Depression, they received orders over the phone, delivered to homes, and issued credit. The Second World War saw delivery boys being drafted one after another. Evelyn had to become the delivery boy. She talked about being the first woman in Bellingham to wear overalls and having to climb a lot of stairs. They sold the store after the Second World War and Evelyn went back to school. The first time she graduated from Bellingham Normal School, only two years of college were required to teach. When she returned to school, four years of college were required. After finishing her four-year teaching degree at Western Washington College, she taught in Burlington for two years (about 1949/50) before a job opened up at the Central School in Ferndale. She taught fourth grade at Central from about 1950 until she retired in 1967. Jack Larson passed away in 1960. Later, Evelyn met and married Floyd Green. Floyd and Evelyn traveled and danced until Floyd's death in the 70s. Evelyn continued to travel, visiting most of the world and taking each of her grandchildren on one special trip. In 1998, Evelyn sold the family home on 21st Street where her family had lived for 76 years. She moved to her long-time weekend home at Birch Bay. Evelyn was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars World War I Auxiliary for over 65 years and a golden member of the Sons of Norway. Surviving family members include two boys (Jack Larson and Jerry Larson), five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. At Evelyn's request, a private family service will be held. A Celebration of Life will be held at Norway Hall, Bellingham, on Sunday, March 19 from 3 to 5 o'clock. Memorials may be made to Blaine Senior Center.
