George C. Brown was a member of Company E, 24th Maine Infantry Regiment in the American Civil War. According to Civil War Soldier Records and Profiles, George enlisted in Temple, Maine, on October 13, 1862 at the age of 26 . The 24th mustered in to service on October 16 for 9 months and was attached to the 3rd Brigade, 2nd Division, XIX Corps, Department of the Gulf. It was ordered home on July 24, 1863. George mustered out on August 25, 1863 in Augusta. George's rank at enlistment was wagoneer.

In the 1880 census, George (44) and his wife Martha (45) were living in Easton, Aroostook County, Maine. Also in the home were children Herbert W. (8) and Myrtle (4).
