Bene came to Allegany County from St. Mary's County, Maryland. He was admitted to the Allegany County bar in 1805. A successful attorney, Pigman was also a State Senator (1831-1836) when that office was filled by a senatorial electoral college; representatives of which were elected by the people. Bene S. Pigman served as the second Post Master of Cumberland, holding that office from July 1, 1802, until 1807. His wife, Harriet Brisco, was the sister of Colonel Hanson Brisco who served as Clerk of the Circuit Court of Allegany County (1811-1816). His tombstone reads:
Thanks be to God who gave him the victory
through our Lord Jesus Christ.
