During their 44 year marriage, Jack - with Barbara's help - amassed substantial holdings in real estate, broadcasting, publishing and professional sports (including the Los Angeles Lakers and Inglewood arena) that were estimated at that time to be worth between $80 million and $100 million dollars. They divorced in 1979 and she received a record settlement of approximately $41 million in recognition of her contributions to Jack Kent Cooke's success. She soon remarried and enjoyed living in retirement with her second husband, Thomas Berwald, in New York and California. She had two children with Jack Kent Cooke: Ralph Kent Cooke (who preceded her in death) and Jack Kent Cooke. Her cause of death was heart failure.
