Edwin & Nellie married on April 9, 1905

MY GRANDFATHER
-my mom always referred to you as - "Pop"

Edwin was a Brakeman for the Rock Island Railroad and a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen (B of RRT). He operated out of Trenton, Missouri, Station #416. Edwin had just returned from a train run to Kansas when he died suddenly, there at the rail yard, from a heart attack. He was only 45 years of age, and left behind a widow and 6 children - five daughters and one son. His lone son turned 18 years old the next day and became unforeseen, the man of the household.

My mother being the youngest in the family, was 6 years old when her father died.

When my mother was the very young age of 3 years, she became gravely ill with pneumonia. The doctor said he had done all that he could and Eunice's dad (Edwin) should be called home, as his little girl was not expected to live. When Edwin arrived, he and my grandmother used the only remedies available to them.

They warmed flannel cloths in the oven and placed them on Eunice's chest, to which they had applied Vicks VapoRub ointment. All through the night they worked to keep the flannel warmed for her VapoRub treatments. By morning her breathing had eased, and she did recover - to live another 67 productive years.

NOTE: from Wikipedia - Vick's Family Remedies had their beginnings in 1890. The most popular remedy was Croup and Pneumonia Salve, which was first compounded in 1891, in Greensboro [North Carolina]. It was introduced in 1905 with the name Vick's Magic Croup Salve and rebranded as VapoRub in 1912.
