Daughter of Jeremiah (known as Jacob since his father was also named Jeremiah) and Mary (Drew) Doud, who were both born in Pennsylvania, Belle was a schoolteacher when she married Harry Niemeyer in 1899. She and Harry raised two sons, Jason and John Harry, or 'Jack'. Jack taught school in Rochester, NY and Jack's wife Marjorie ran for NY State Assembly in 1936 (Jack and Marjorie later moved to Greenwich Village where he headed the private Bank School and was instrumental in developing school curricula for urban children, helping to establish "Head Start").
