There were but few men in Floyd county more widely known than "Uncle Jake Anthony." There was hardly a child in the county who did not know him. He came to this county in 1819, and has continuously resided here since. He was the proprietor of the first livery stable in New Albany, and at one time was engaged in the grocery business on the ground now occupied by Frank A. Lewis. He had been the sheriff of Floyd county, and was also a representative of the county in the state legislature, and surveyor of the port of New Albany. He was born in Paris, Bourbon county, Ky., and had he lived until the 25th of March next, his age would have been 79 years. Mr. A. was married to Miss Sarah Ann Marsh, daughter of Samuel Marsh, in the year [1828]. Ten children were born unto them, six of whom survive. This morning "Uncle Jake" came up from his residence, as was his usual custom, visited his various friends, and went to Judge John S. Davis' office in search of his son, Col. D. C. Anthony. From there he went to the office of James V. Kelso, adjoining in the Vernia block, and asked for his son there. [testimony of the coroner's jury] Verdict: deceased came to his death from heart disease. - New Albany Daily Ledger-Standard 04 Jan 1878
