H.R. (Lad) Anderson was born in Wichita, Kansas, and grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from Chicago Latin School, served in the U.S. Navy during WWII as a pilot, attended Northwestern University and graduated from Colorado State University in Fort Collins with a degree in Animal Husbandry where he met Lois Bromm, his future wife.
Lad and Lois were married January 2, 1950 in Denver, Colorado in Lois' home church.
After a time in Lewiston, Idaho working for International Harvester, Lad returned to Chicago to attend McCormick Presbyterian Theological Seminary. In 1953 Lad and Lois moved to Montana, where he served parishes in Deer Lodge, Bozeman and Great Falls. His last parish was in Los Gatos, California where he and Lois spent 15 wonderful years.
They retired to Big Sky, Montana and then moved to Bellingham, Washington after the birth of their first grandchild. They became part of the community in Bellingham and have called it home for the past 18 years.
Anderson received an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Rocky Mountain College, Billings, Montana and earned a Doctor of Ministry degree from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He was active in the Presbyterian church at the local, regional and national level, serving for many years on the Board of the Presbyterian Foundation and the Board of National Missions.
Dr. Anderson is survived by Lois, his wife of 62 years; daughter, Carolyn (Lynn), of Port Angeles; son, David (Tim), of Seattle; daughter, Laurie Newall (Tim), of Mt. Vernon; son, Mark, of Pittsburgh, PA.; and three grandchildren, Annaleigh, Adelicia and Ross Newall.
Memorials can be sent to First Congregational Church, Bellingham, St James Presbyterian Church, Bellingham or the Covenant Network of the Presbyterian Church or a place of your choice.
