On May 14, 1939, John married Jean Higbee in Dubuque, Iowa. She was born August 9, 1916, in La Crosse, La Crosse County, Wisconsin, a daughter of Jesse Edward Higbee and Edna Dagny Coren. She died September 24, 2016, in Menomonie, Dunn County, Wisconsin, aged 100 years, 1 month and 15 days, and was buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery in La Crosse. Their five children were:

John graduated in the University of Wisconsin medical school class of 1943. He served as a Captain in the U. S. Army and was awarded a Bronze Star in 1945 for evacuating wounded soldiers in the Battle of the Bulge. After World War II he practiced medicine in Menomonie, Wisconsin. In 1957 he moved to Nevada and practiced in Boulder City. At the time of his death he was a staff physician for the Atomic Energy Commission.
In addition to his children, John was survived by his father and sisters Marion Hole and Katherine Anderson. He was preceded in death by his mother and brothers James and Joseph.
