Frederick S. Bachelder

Sheriff Frederick S. Bachelder of Red Lodge, served 3 terms as Chief Officer of Carbon County, gained a well-merited reputation in his official capcity, and was also a leading farmer and sheep man of his section. He was 5 years old when he came to Fort Collins, CO with his parents and there secured his education in the public schools.

Reared in the vocation of sheep and cattle raising, at the age of 18 left home for Wyoming, where he worked as a cowboy in the employ of the Powser River Live Stock Company for 3 years, then returning to CO to visit his father. On his return to Wyoming, he was employed at the same company for another year, and in the spring of 1891 he went to Billings, MT where he secured employment as a cowboy with the Ox Yoke Cattle Company. He then became a bartender in Linton Brothers establishment in Billings, and after about 3 years removed to Joliet, MT and engaged in the grocery and liquor business, remaining there 3 years.

At this time he took up government land in Clark Fork, Carbon Co. where he first engaged in farming and cattle raising, and after several years replaced his cattle with sheep.

He was elected Sheriff in Carbon County 6 Nov 1910, having formerly served as Deputy Sheriff from 1900-02. He was re-elected Nov 1910. He was connected with the Bear Tooth Lodge No. 534, B.P.O.E.
