Nelson was the son of George Bellas and Virginia Laura Booth. He was married December 23, 1884 in Sedalia, Pettis Co., Missouri to Emma B. Stotts. They had one child, George Franklin Bellas b.1890 MO.

Nelson was a railroad engineer. He died suddenly of uremic poisoning with no medical attendant. He was removed from El Dorado Springs to Sedalia for burial on May 1, 1914, no cemetery was listed.
