Charlotte was born into a very wealthy family, with her father being one of the most influential and public spirited men of his time in Rochester, NY. She became the second wife of Rev. Francis H. Cuming, D.D. in 1830, and they moved to Grand Rapids in 1843 after spending 4 years in Ann Arbor before this. Her husband was the rector of St. Mark's church until his death. Together they had 6 children, all girls: Mary, Charlotte (married Dr. Reed of Philadelphia), Frances (married Mr. Nourse of Allegan Co), Emily and Anna, and one who died in infancy. Charlotte was also the step-mother to her husband's 2 children from his first marriage, the son becoming governor of Nebraska.
