In a Honolulu burn unit, Michael Touchette lies hooked to a ventilator, his lungs scarred by fire. He uses sign language to communicated.

A man in a homicidal rage torched the former Fayetteville resident's home on Monday, killing Touchette's two infant children and seriously burning him and his wife, Wendy, Honolulu police say. Twenty miles away, four of the man's relatives were found shot, two of them fatally.

Honolulu police say it is one of the most heinous crime sprees they've ever seen. The Touchettes apparently were just in the wrong place at the wrong time. "This was a real sad situation," said Honolulu Police Lt. William Chur. "It's kind of unusual for Hawaii, but I guess stuff like that happens even over here."

Touchette is the son of John and Evelyn Touchette of Sackets Harbor and Manlius. John Touchette is president of Touchette Corp., a data processing company in DeWitt.

The bizarre attack has rocked the family.

"It's just a tragic, tragic thing that's happened," said an uncle, Michael Touchette of Fayetteville. "This man lost his two children, he might lose his own life, and his wife was burned."

Michael Touchette, 31, and Wendy, 27, moved to Hawaii after the birth of their 2 1/2-year-old daughter Kalah, who was born in Columbia, Md. They had a son, Joshua, born in October. Both died of smoke inhalation from the fire.

The parents were in serious condition at Strawb Clinic and Hospital in Honolulu, Dr. James Penoff said.

HONOLULU police said the murder spree began Sunday night when Orlando Ganal, 37, of Waipahu broke into the home of his estranged wife's parents, Santiago and Aradina Dela Cruz, both 59, and shot them dead.

He then shot his wife, Mabel, 34, and son, Orlando Jr., 14, police said. Both are in Honolulu hospitals.

POLICE SAID Ganal then drove 2 miles to Kailua, where the Touchettes live. He is accused of splashing their home with gasoline and setting it on fire as they slept.

The Honolulu Advertiser reported that Ganal believed Touchette's brother, David, was living there. David Touchette had been dating Mabel Ganal, the newspaper reported, and Orlando Ganal sought him in a jealous rage.

David Touchette was no longer at the home. He had moved back to the mainland, the newspaper reported.

Police said Ganal was arrested after attempting to burn down his workplace, a laundry service where he was employed as a delivery man. He has been charged with first-degree murder and attempted murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and terroristic threatening.

He is being held in the Oahu Community Correctional Facility on $1.5 million bail. He faces life imprisonment without parole if convicted.

Relatives describe Michael Touchette as a sweet, unassuming man who had converted to the Mormon faith shortly after graduating from Fayetteville-Manlius High School. He had recently opened a photo processing lab in Honolulu with his brother-in-law.

He is the fourth-oldest in a family of 10 children, said an aunt, Mary Ellen Tomanovich of Rochester.

Funeral arrangements for the Touchette children are being handled by Ordenstein's Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary. A benefit fund for the couple has been established in care of Bishop Craig W. Tuckett, 460 Barben Ave., Watertown, N.Y. 13601.
