Yvonne Cunningham-Norum, a great-niece of Delia and long-time family historian, wrote a story called "The Death of Delia - A Tragedy," of which the following were the opening lines.

"Delia Frey was born May 16, 1888 on a farm in Lowell Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin. She was the last of ten children born to Charles W. Frey, Sr. and Wilhelmine (Sekert) Frey.

"Delia's parents had a large German bible in which the family records were written in German.

"Her birth entry [in the bible] was Lusina Landila, and her death entry was Landila Lusina. Her marriage certificate was Delia, her death certificate and obituary were Landilla, and her cemetery marker reads Landelia. But she was always known as Delia.

"She was a school teacher and a very good piano player. Delia was a pretty woman with blonde hair, a slim figure, and a tiny waist."

Delia was my grandmother. She died just a couple weeks after my father was born. This was the tragedy of which Yvonne wrote. Yvonne's grandparents, Rob and Maggie (Frey) MITTELSTADT, moved in with the grieving father, Benjamin Herman MITTELSTADT, and helped him care for his children, of whom there were four, Stanley, Kenneth, Marles and Franklin, the oldest being but five and a half years of age.
