Portage Wisconsin Newspaper Obituary

Mrs. Ursula Lavigne, aged 99 years, 10 months and 13 days, died at the home of her son, Edward and daughter, Mrs. J. James on East Canal Street Thursday evening June 18, 1908 at 8 o’clock. She was of French-Canadian parentage and was married in 1826 to John LeRoy; to them was born one son who survives. Mr. LeRoy died about a year after their marriage and in 1833 she was married to Charles Lavigne of Green Lake County, and settled on a farm. In 1838 they moved to old Fort Winnebago and with exception of a few years spent at Grand Rapids, she has lived in this vicinity ever since. Mr. Lavigne died 13 years ago.

Mrs. Lavigne was a devout member of the Catholic church and was considered one of the oldest pioneers in this section of the state. Francois LeRoy, father of her first husband, at one time claimed the present site of the city of Portage.

The surviving children are John of Wrightstown, Brown County, John B. of Caledonia, Edward and Mrs. J. James of Portage, Mrs. Sophia Pugh of Caledonia, Mrs. Emma Pfaff of Olympia, Wash. The deceased was a cousin of Mrs. T.J. Prescott of Caledonia, who is a daughter of Pierre Paquette. She has 37 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from St. Mary’s church tomorrow morning, Rev. John Morrissey officiating.
