Tony Arthur Carter was the son of James Wesley Carter and Bertha Ann Berger, and brother to Randolph, John, Blueford, Margery, George (Dewey), Nancy, Rhoda (Florence), James, and William.

He married Lola Gladys Stevens on October 10, 1923 in Kingsley, Plymouth County, Iowa. Tony lived most of his life in Clay County, Kansas.

Employment was scarce. In 1943 he went to Vancouver, WA to find work. He was able to get employment in Portland, Oregon working in the shipping industry helping to build war ships. In later years he worked as a carpenter, building houses, garages and remodeling. He also helped with the building of homes at Schilling Air Force Base in Salina, Kansas.
Hobbies included gardening, fishing, and hunting, playing checkers, cards, and other board games and putting puzzles together.

Tony had a special relationship with his God. He enjoyed walking through the wheat fields, plucking a few heads of grain, pondering. Through nature he felt close to God.

Tony and Lola Carter were parents to 11 children, the following are deceased:
