EDWARD BREY (d. 1943)

Edward Brey. Sr., 90, retired Manitowoc merchant and resident here for
70 years, died this morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred
Levenhagen, 830 North Eight street.
Funeral plans are indefinite awaiting arrival of a son, Walter Brey, from
Chicago this afternoon, but will be held either Monday or Tuesday afternoon
from the Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran church. The Rev. Theophil Uetzmann,
will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery.
Mr. Brey was born in Germany in 1853 and came to Manitowoc in 1872. He
worked in the northern lumber woods for a time and then took a position in
the grist mill of Flueger and Wall. He remained with this firm nine years
and then became a salesman for M. Kellner and Sons.
In 1905 Mr. Brey engaged in the flour, feed and produce business on North
Eight street. He was later joined in the business by his son, Edward, Jr.,
and the business expanded to the general grocery line and later moved to a
new location at North Eight and Chicago streets.
He retired from active business of heading the store in 1927 and the
business was taken over by his son, Edward, Jr. who died in 1930.
Mr. Brey married Miss Dorothea Schroeder 69 years ago. She died in 1924.
Since retiring Mr. Brey has been making his home with his children.
Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Levenhagen of this city, Mrs. Norman Markle,
of Rochester, Minn., son, Walter, of Chicago; five grandchildren and seven
grandchildren.
The body may be viewed at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home from
Sunday noon until the hour of service.
