Dorothy Brixius Dies at Hospital
Miss Dorothy Ann Brixius, 49, of 810 S. 28th St., died Friday morning at Holy
Family Hospital.
Miss Brixius, who had been an artist and had done industrial illustrations for
industrial firms, had suffered numerous illnesses through her lifetime and had
submitted to 18 operations.
Her last operation was in October, 1963, at University Hospital, Madison, where
during three and a half hours of surgery attempt was made to correct a defect
in her esophagus. During her convalescence she undertook to raise funds toward
purchase of an $8,000 esophagus testing or measuring machine for the University
of Wisconsin Hospitals, Madison.
Miss Brixius was born Jan. 30, 1916, at Yankton, S.D., daughter of the late
George Brixius Sr., and Clara Chvala Brixius. She came to Manitowoc when five
years of age with her parents. After graduation from Lincoln High School she was
educated at Layton Art School, Milwaukee, and a School of Art, graduating with a
major in industrial design and a minor in sculpture.
Listed in Who’s Who
In 1956, she was chosen by the editorial board of “Who’s Who in America” to be
listed in the first edition of “Who’s Who of American Women.” She had also been
listed in the “Who’s Who in American Art.”
During World War II she was employed by the United States Navy at Allis Chalmers
and while there she helped work on drawings for the machine that split the atom.
It was at this period she designed the prize winning poster for recruiting
officers and Waves for the Navy.
In 1946, she opened the Little Tot Studio and in the period of five years took
hundreds of children portraits. In 1951, she was employed at Manitowoc Engineering
Co. as art director, remaining until 1958. She was a member of the Manitowoc
Braille Club since its inception in 1964.
Funeral Monday
Surviving are her mother, two brothers, George Jr., and Harold, a sister, Mrs.
Francis Powalisz, of Manitowoc and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home
and at 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church. The Very Rev. Clement Kern will
officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at the
funeral home after 3 p.m. Sunday here at 7 p.m. the Rosary will be recited.
