MANITOWOC MEN DIE IN THREE CAR COLLISION
Five Persons Are Injured in Same Accident.
Crash Saturday Night Occurs on 141 and Trunk D
MANITOWOC--A three-car accident four miles north of here Saturday evening claimed the lives of two persons and injured five others, several seriously.
The dead are:
John F. Bruechert, Sr., 77, of 1512 Division St., Manitowoc, killed almost instantly.
Leonard Herzog, 57, of 424 Riverside Drive, Manitowoc, who died at Holy Family Hospital about 11 p.m. Sunday of injuries received in the crash.
Under treatment at local hospitals are Mr. and Mrs. Charles Douglas Sr., 66 and 59, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc; Mr. and Mrs. John A. Moseler, both 23, of Madison, and Richard Moseler, 26, of Milwaukee.
The Douglas couple was reported ___ ___ condition at Memorial Hospital Monday after being taken off the critical list. Douglas has broken ribs and a fractured right knee while his wife is suffering from a fractured left hip and multiple lacerations and contusions.
Most seriously injured of the others is John Moseler, who received a fractured pelvis and broken left arm. His wife and brother, Richard, escaped with bruises and lacerations. The Moselers are former Two Rivers residents and John now makes his home in Madison while attending the University of Wisconsin.
Occurred at 6:30 p.m.
County traffic police said the accident occurred about 6:30 p.m. at the junction of Highway 141 and County Trunk D.
Herzog and Bruechert were traveling south on 141 in Herzog’s 1953 Buick sedan when it collided with a westbound 1956 Dodge convertible driven by John Moseler, which went through an arterial sign. Following the impact the Moseler ________- the eastbound Douglas car, which was running _____ on the west side of the intersection.
Both the Herzog and Douglas cars landed in the ditch in an upright condition while the Moseler convertible continued about 100 feet west before coming to rest on its wheels on the county trunk. All the occupants except the Douglas couple were thrown out.
The Moseler car burst into flames almost immediately after the crash and was burned over an estimated 70 percent of its body. The fire was extinguished by the Rockwood Volunteer Fire Dept.
Force of the initial impact was so great that ir ripped the engine out of the Herzog vehicle. It was found lying in the highway.
Bruechert was tossed into a barb wire fence and died of a skull fracture. An emergency operation was performed on Herzog but he expired about 11 __ Sunday of a..(line unreadable).
Blinded by Sun
John Moseler told police later that he was blinded by the sun and did not see the arterial sign. Coroner Thedore Teitgen said there would be an inquest into the accident.
The Moselers had attended a wedding earlier in the day and were enroute to the reception at a nearby farmhouse at the time of the crash, according to Dr. Teitgen. The Douglas couple was returned home after working at a store at Grimms. Destination of the two victims was not immediately available.
Debris from the wreckage was scattered over an area125 to 150 feet…
Funeral services for Bruechert, a retired employe of Manitowoc, Shipbuilding, Inc., will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Blaufuss will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
He was born in this city Oct. 8, 1879, son of the late Charles and Mathilda Boeder Bruechert. Thirty-four years ago he married Martha Holub and was employed at the (Continued on page M-13)

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Edwin Bialek Sr., and Mrs. Harry Herton of Manitowoc; four sons, Leonard of Manitowoc Rapids and John Jr., Ellsworth and Earl of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Alois Fischl Sr., of Manitowoc, 22 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
